- Title:
- Richard March: Correspondence with The New English Weekly
- Scope & Content:
-
(1) Six autograph letters from Philip Mairet (editor, The New English Weekly) to March, all on The New English Weekly letterhead:
- Mairet to March (London, 3 December, 1941), proposing to publish his article (not identified) in two edited excerpts in 1942 ('you have condensed an astonishingly comprehensive Spenglerian aperçu into the limits of an essay');
- Mairet to March (London, 15 June, 1945), appreciative of March's 'long letter' which has just been passed to Maurice Reckitt;
- Mairet to March (London, 9 July, 1945), again appreciative of a long letter ('your general reflections are more than shrewd');
- Mairet to March (London, 26 November, 1945): 'Your war story is admirable';
- Mairet to March (London, 12 February, 1946);
- Mairet to March (London, 1 May, 1946): 'Thanks also for the letter to publish'.
(2) Autograph letter (London, 2 January, 1946) from C H Sisson to Mairet, together with an article by one Richard Ampersand [Sisson] 'Motives for Treason' (typescript, 7 sheets). The article discusses Henri de Montherlant's treason in the light of Montherlant, Les jeunes filles. The letter and article were presumably passed by Mairet to March for comment. Sisson writes of the adoption of 'Richard Ampersand' as his 'nom de guerre' that the habit of writing excites 'suspicion' amongst his colleagues: 'I prefer the name which is mine as a civil servant not to appear much outside the official files where, alas, it belongs'.
(3) A single autograph letter from Julian Symons to March (Blackheath, 29 January, 1946), responding to an invitation to review.
(4) Four brief letters concerning reviewing matters.
