- Scope & Content:
-
(1) March to Tambimuttu (manuscript, Monaco, 2 January, 1949, 3 sheets): his father's health suddenly deteriorating, March to remain in Monaco 'for some time', Tambimuttu to continue as best he can, no further funds from March ('In a little over a year I have now spent £9000 most of which is irretrievably lost').
(2) Tambimuttu to March (typescript, William Campion letterhead, 6 January, 1949, 1 sheet), positive about orders and enquiries for 'The Summer Annual' and two 'Tom Merry' books.
(3) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, 7 January, 1949, 1 sheet), very sorry to hear March's 'sad news'.
(4) March to Tambimuttu (manuscript, Monaco, 11 January, 1949, 4 sheets): returning to London next week and then returning to Monaco, having decided 'to make arrangements to discontinue the partnership'.
(5) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, Hotel Palais D'Orsay, Paris, without date [February, 1949], 3 sheets), announcing he is to marry the American artist Buffie Johnson [1912-2006] in the following month and would like Richard March to be Best Man; associated rapid plans for a New York branch for Poetry London.
(6) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, [London], PL embossed paper, dated 'Monday' only [February, 1949], 2 sheets), beginning 'I am as if dreaming': further excited plans, including 'a Mayfair office', and 'glad you have asked Nick [Moore] and Ronnie [Duncan] to join us'.
(7) Tambimuttu to March (typescript, 12 February, 1949, 1 sheet letter with information sheet about Buffie Johnson): further remarks about the positive influence that Johnson is having on his outlook.
(8) March to Tambimuttu (manuscript, Editions Poetry London Ltd letterhead, 8 March, 1949, 3 sheets), writing to him in Paris, with a view to forthcoming Annual General Meeting (30 March) at which he intends to propose that Tambimuttu 'retire as Director, at least for the next twelve months' and that Nicholas Moore, Ronald Duncan and (perhaps) Ronald Bottrall be proposed as Directors, Tambimuttu to remain as 'editor-in-chief'.
(9) Three letters (manuscript, 4 sheets) from Tambimuttu to March, all from Hotel Palais D'Orsay, Paris, without date [March or April, 1949]: Johnson is returning to America; 'A PL without me would be pointless don't you think'.
(10) March to Tambimuttu (manuscript copy postcard, 2 April, 1949): 'Board decided to terminate your services with the company as from first April ... Please do not attend at twenty four Manchester Square again' (letter of confirmation sent to Tambimuttu's London address).
(11) [Editions Poetry London Ltd] to Tambimuttu (carbon typescript, 3 April, 1949, 1 sheet): letter advising Tambimuttu his services have been dispensed with ('owing to extremely unsatisfactory behaviour').
(12) [Editions Poetry London Ltd] to Tambimuttu (carbon typescript, the names of Nicholas Moore and Ronald Duncan at the head of sheet, 4 April, 1949, 1 sheet): letter concerning salary and National Insurance matters (incongruously addressed to 'Dear Tambi').
(13) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, 24 Culross Street, London, 16 April, 1949, 9 sheets), shocked, and co-operative.
(14) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, [London], 1 May, 1949, 3 sheets), angry, particularly about being barred from the office without access to materials.
(15) Tambimuttu to March (manuscript, without date [June, 1949], 1 sheet), 'glad you want to continue PL under an editorial board including myself' and 'prepared to listen to reason'.
(16) March to Tambimuttu (carbon typescript, 24 June, 1949, 2 sheets): 'You have evidently misunderstood me. There is absolutely no question of your coming back to PL in any active capacity'.
(17) March to Tambimuttu (carbon typescript, 2 September, 1949, 1 sheet), re-iterating firmly that Tambimuttu is not welcome at the office, following further visits in March's absence ('ransacking the place, and taking away all sorts of things').
