- At our arrival found the merchants very much dejected from the ill situation of affairs. The missionarys residing at Canton are all ordered to leave the place in fifeteen days, which is occasioned, as they tell us, for having formerly represented the grievances of Europeans at Court, which we are the more apt to beleive is true because their brethren at Pekin and the Inland Provinces are suffered to stay. Waited on the Phuen and demanded the usual priviledge of the port, who promised all customary rights in general terms, not being able to persuade our Linguist to specify the particulars, from the dread he had on him of ill usage for his freedome.
