This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 61 of 23 August 1866, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of India Foreign Department Letter Political No. 48 of 22 March 1866 to the Secretary of State for India (received 22 April 1866), on the subject of: the Wahabee [Wahhābī] attack on Soor [Sur], and the explanation offered by the Ruler of Nejed [Najd, also spelled Nedjd in this item], Ameer Fysul bin Toorkee [Amīr Fayṣal bin Turkī bin ‘Abdullāh Āl Sa‘ūd]; the question of the existence of a treaty between the Ruler of Nejed and the British Government; and Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly’s operations against the Wahabees in the Persian Gulf.
The enclosed papers, dated 21 December 1865 to 18 March 1866, consist of correspondence (letters and telegrams) between the Secretary to the Government of Bombay and the Secretary to the Government of India. These papers also include enclosed correspondence, dated 19 September to 24 October 1865: from the Uncovenanted Assistant Resident, Persian Gulf, to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay; and from Ameer Fysul bin Toorkee to the Uncovenanted Assistant Resident, Persian Gulf, and Ameer Abdul Azeez bin Ahmed us Sudeyree [Amīr ‘Abd al-‘Azīz bin Aḥmad al-Sudayrī], ‘Chief’ of Jaalan [Jalan Banū Bū ‘Alī].
The papers also include a memorandum drawn up by the Under-Secretary to the Government of India in the Foreign Department, on the relations between the British Government in India and the Wahabee Power in Nejed (ff 116-129).
