This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 61 of 23 August 1866, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay Political Despatch to the Secretary of State for India, dated 8 June 1866, on the subject of the Persian Gulf and Muscat, including:
- The Resident in the Persian Gulf submitting some instances of letters of complaint from the littoral of the Persian Gulf, and requesting that measures be adopted for the suppression of ‘piracy’ in the Gulf
- The Political Agent at Muscat submitting letters received by him from his Assistant Captain Edward Charles Ross at Gwadur [Gwadar], communicating the latest intelligence relating to Muscat and the merchants removed from there by Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly
- Arrangements made for the financial maintenance of Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd, also spelled Sayed Torkee in this item], one of the sons of the late [Imām] of Muscat.
The enclosed papers consist of correspondence, dated 23 April to 28 May 1866. In addition to the Resident in the Persian Gulf and the Political Agent at Muscat, the primary correspondents are the Government of Bombay and the Government of India. Other correspondents include Syud Toorkee.
