Title:

Contracts Entered into by Messrs H A Fraser & Co., British Merchants of Zanzibar, with Arab ‘Slave-owners’ for the Supply of ‘Slaves’ to Work on their Estates

Scope & Content:

This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 24 of 15 February 1867, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of India Foreign Letter Political No. 192 of 8 December 1866 to the Secretary of State for India, received 11 January 1867, relating to contracts entered into by Messrs H A Fraser & Co, British merchants of Zanzibar, with Arab ‘slave-owners’ for the supply of ‘slaves’ [enslaved people] to work on their estates.

The enclosed papers consist of: a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay to the Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, dated 20 October 1866, with enclosures including letters from the Acting Political Agent at Zanzibar, a copy of the contract between H A Fraser & Co and ‘certain Arab contactors’ for the supply of enslaved labourers, the opinion of the Advocate General, Bombay [Mumbai], on the matter, and a resolution of the Government of Bombay; and a response from the Government of India, dated 14 November 1866.
