- This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 1 of 6 January 1869, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The Collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of India Foreign Department Letter Political No. 81 of 14 May 1868 to the Secretary of State for India (received 22 June 1868). The papers concern the subsidy due by the Sultan of Zanzibar [Sayyid Mājid bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd; various spellings feature throughout] to the Ruler of Muscat [Sayyid Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd; various spellings present], and the former’s refusal to make the payment. The Collection was compiled for information purposes for the Secretary of State for India to compose the answering Political Despatch.
The main correspondents are the following: the Government of Bombay and the Government of India Foreign Department; Political Agent, Zanzibar; and Sultan of Zanzibar.
Included is a memorandum by Lieutenant Henry Rawlinson and Frederick Currie (f 229). At the end of the Collection are printed extracts from historical records regarding the possession of and trade in enslaved people by Kutchees [Zanzibar-based Indians from Kutch, i.e. Kachchh] in Zanzibar (ff 232-259). In addition, there is a memorandum regarding the trade in enslaved people by Kutchees in Zanzibar, which is dated 14 February 1870 and written by Kazi Shahabuddin (ff 260-268).
