- This volume consists of collections to India Political Despatches from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department, numbers 1-15, dated 6 January to 11 February 1869. The collections consist of papers forwarded with the Government of India’s Foreign Letters to the Secretary of State for India. The collections were compiled for information purposes for the Secretary of State for India to compose the answering Political Despatches, which are not included in the collections. There is more than one collection to some of the Political Despatches. Coll 1/1 to Coll 1/11 and Coll 6/1 and 6/2 include some papers dated later than the corresponding Political Despatches. There are no Coll 2 and Coll 8. Each collection includes a cover sheet, stating to which India Political Despatch it is a collection, which India Foreign Letter the Political Despatch is in response to, and the subject of the collection.

- Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 617; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. Multiple mixed foliation/pagination sequences are also present; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled.
Several blank pieces of paper have been included in this volume between folios 465 and 555. These have been inserted for structural conservation purposes and do not contain information, and so have not been included in the foliation sequence.
