Scope & Content:

This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 4 of 7 December 1869, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of India Foreign Department Letter Political No. 168 of 7 October 1868 to the Secretary of State for India (received 16 November 1868) on the subject of the advisability, or otherwise, of retaining the steamer Comet in Mesopotamia [Iraq]. Further information is included on the estimated cost of repairing the vessel, and the alternative possibility of replacing it with a new one. The collection was compiled for information purposes for the Secretary of State for India to compose the answering Political Despatch.

The main correspondents are the following: the Government of Bombay; the Indian Navy; and the Political Agent in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq].
