- Title:
- Annals of Thorney Abbey and an Easter-table 961–1421
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains some pages of the annals or notes of important events of the Benedictine abbey St Mary the Virgin and St Botolph of Thorney. Entries were placed next to the years in a chart used for calculation of the date of Easter. These five leaves were originally bound together with another manuscript from Thorney Abbey, now Oxford, St John's College MS 17, which is a compilation of computus material (texts and tables).
This portion begins with the reign of King Edgar (Eadgar), during which the monastery was refounded in the early 970s (the original foundation was called Ancarig and founded about 662) by Aethelwold, Bishop of Winchester. The event is marked by two notes, one in large letters. The death of Edgar is recorded ('O' for 'obit') below the foundation note (f. 80r), with the sighting of a comet interpreted as a sign of tragic events. The annals record the deaths of Edward the Martyr, King of England, and Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as that of Aethelwold, and the accession of King Aethelred and of Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury. The last entries (1006) record the death of Archbishop Aelfric, the succession of Alfege and the arrival of a great fleet, the Danes.
These leaves have been removed from Oxford, St John’s College, MS. 17, which includes the rest of the Easter-table chronicle, spanning 538–960 (ff. 139r–143v) and 1422–2612 (ff. 144r–155v).
