This manuscript contains part of the Cotton-Corpus Legendary, the oldest substantial legendary from England, along with parts of a cartulary, office lections and part of a law code which were inserted into the lectionary much later. It contains:
ff. 1-180, 187-188: part of the first volume of the Cotton-Corpus Legendary.
ff. 166-80: part of second section of the second volume of the Cotton-Corpus Legendary.
ff. 181r-184v: part of the ‘Wulfstan Cartulary’/‘Nero-Middleton Cartulary’/‘Oswald Cartulary’, including a list of the estates of Worcester Cathedral.
ff 185r-186v: Office lections; law-code IV Edgar (excerpt), copied in the late 10th or early 11th century.
ff 189-222: part of another Legendary (imperfect), copied in the late 12th or early 13th century, covering saints whose feast days are in May, July, and August.

Binding: British Museum/ British Library in-house, rebound in 1969.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: number 219 in his catalogue of 1621 (Harley MS 6018). Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
