Sumner, General Carnac, Sir Eyre Coote,† Colonel Munro, Sir G. Colebrooke, and Mr Strachey. “The Genuine Minutes of the Select Committee appointed by the House of Commons …..” (printed for T. Evans) contains a description of the Battle of Plassey, “taken verbatim from Sir Eyre Coote’s Journal,” which is purported to be identical with that read to the Committee by Sir Eyre Coote. Its authenticity is doubtful, and it appears probable that it was inserted with a view of supporting the allegation that Clive was asleep during an important phase of the battle (cf copy of Coote’s Journal, Orme’s MSS., India, Vol. vii, p. 1667, and letter from Mr. J. Walsh to Proprietors of East India Stock regarding queries published by Mr Bekchier in 1763 concerning Battle of Plassey, Orme’s MSS, India, Vol. xi., p.3018 and Bengal in 1756-7, Indian Records Series, Vol. iii, p.403; Hill).
