Contains documents relating to the Literary Fund’s searches for premises or to offers made regarding properties. The 1840 search for premises in central London is documented in letters from correspondents including Octavian Blewitt, John Newman, George Byrom Whittaker, William Kingdom, John Stewart, William Cadogan, William Duncombe, John Bowyer Nichols, William Nicol, H Dowling, George Woodfall, Henry Kingsfield, James Brooks and William Tooke. In 1854 it was proposed that the Fund rent rooms in the House of the Royal Society of Literature, documented a letter from N Hill, a costing by Blewitt and a printed circular signed by the Registrars. There is a single letter from R Mill in 1867, two from James Duncan in 1871 and one from George Godwin in 1874. The file concludes with extensive records of a search made in 1889, including detailed accounts of several locations, a long list of properties considered and letters to Arthur Llewelyn Roberts from correspondents including William Smith, Edward Henry Stanley, Earl of Derby, J C Parkinson, Benjamin Ward Richardson, Theodore Martin, “Fladgates”, the Secretary of the Imperial Institute, J W Whittall of the Royal Statistical Society and William James Farrer.
