Portrait of Sir John Soane, V.P. and its Destruction
- Scope & Content:
-
Contains correspondence relating to the commissioning of a portrait of Sir John Soane from Daniel M’Clise. This portrait so offended its subject that William Jerdan took it upon himself to save the Literary Fund Committee from embarrassment by breaking in to the Fund’s house at night cutting the picture ‘almost to ribbons.’ Contains letters from M’Clise, John Bowyer Nichols, Jerdan, Soane and Joseph Snow and cuttings on the incident from the Morning Post (10 May 1836) and the Times (25 May 1836).
