- Document 1
- Scope & Content:
- In 1865, solicitor presented before justice a statement claiming that Martha, minor, was a free person. She was the daughter of the late Major Joaquim Inocencio de Santiago with Romana, his Black slave. For him, Martha was free not because she was the daughter of a free man (laws were clear about that), but because her father left a letter freeing her. Santiago’s heir, João Caetano Ribeiro, was keeping Martha as his slave. The solicitor demanded the maintenance of her freedom. Emilio de Moraes Dias, judge. Joaquim Pereira Ribeiro Junior, scrivener. Antonio Pereira Paes da Silva, solicitor.
