- Belisario and his wife, Ritta, both very old and sick, Black slaves of Domingos José Ferreira and his wife Floriana Maria da Conceição, both deceased, presented before justice the amount of 87,000 réis to buy their manumission. Despite the fact that this amount was considered an adequate amount by most of the heirs, one of them, Antonio de Souza Monteiro, “without any solid reason,” was against freeing the couple of slaves. After a while, Monteiro explained that he considered the offer insufficient because Belisario had many skills as carpenter, caulker, and foreman of sugar-cane mill.
