Genre/Subject Matter:
This detailed maritime scene shows the experimental frigate Vernon at sea in the Persian Gulf in January 1834. In the background high, white cliffs are visible at left. A smaller boat, perhaps a dhow, flies a red flag at left. The frigate flies a Red Ensign as well as a red pennant.
A small unfinished sketch on the verso appears to depict the stern of a sailing ship.
