Until ceded to the bay E.I. Company by the Angria Chief of Kolaba in 1828 the Bombay Government had no rigths on this island. The first light (1852) was established before the employment of the ships 'Pilgrim' and 'Christian'. It was than hurriedly demolished before it could again be mistaken for light at Colaba Point. The corner stone of the persent lighthouse, exactly on the meridian, was laid in January 1867.
