The Franciscan church & convent of Santa Barbara. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Note one of the several breaches in the seaward walls.
A former Portuguese settlement on the banks of the Ambalika river. 30 miles by sea from Bombay and 7 from Alibagh. An inscription in the forecourt states that the ramparts were completed in 1577, but many additions to the defences were subsequently made. But on a smaller scale the Portuguese had been there since 1508. Then, greatly distressed by the Maharattas and unable to adequately garrison all their outlying posts, they offered Chaul to the British in 1740 (Bassein having fallen in 1739). The East India Company, however, had insufficient means to maintain it. Moreover it had no commercial advantages not enjoyed by Bombay itself. Chaul, therefore was ceded by the Portuguese by treaty with the Maharattas. All the Portuguese and those of the Christian converts who could do so were evacuated to Goa. When this territory was acquired by the British they had no more interest in arresting the (?)deccy of Chaul than had their immediate predecessors.
