The Konkun Coast, Janjira. The island fort. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
The island fort has the appearance of a battleship riding an anchor. The silhouette of the Balla Hissar or citadel giving an illusion of gun turrets. There are many guns lying around but even in 1784 they were pronounced by an officer of the Bo. Army to be mounted on carriages unlikely to withstand the shock of more than 4 or 5 discharges.
40 miles from Bombay. A stronghold set in an arm of the sea wherein dwelt the rulers of the contiguous mainland. Of seafaring stock they were hereditary High Admirals of the Great Moghul, in which capacity they provided naval protection for the overlord's mercantile shipping, Surat being the emporium for imperial Delhi. The Mahrattas and the piratical Angrias were his chief enemies, as they were likewise of the English Company of Merchant Adventurers. Thus the Hubshee or Sidhee as the Chief of Janjira was also known became an ally of the Bombay Presidency; and up to the British leaving India was recognized as an independent ruler.
