Severndrug [Suvarnadurg Fort], The Konkun Coast. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
An island fort 78 miles from Bombay and 1/2 mile offshore of the village of Hurnai. This group of fortresses was taken in 1755 by Comodore Jones of the Indian Navy from Tulajee Angria, of a junior but more aggressive branch of the Kolaba Angrias. Tulajee's most successful exploit was the capture, after a running fight of the East India's Company's ship 'Derby'. This ship with her crew and passengers (among the latter a few European ladies) was taken into Severndrug. The people aboard her were released only after much negotiation and bargaining. Jones' victory is commemorated in Severndrug Tower, Shooters Hill, London.
A gateway with curved approach to the wooden doors. These were hacked through by axes welded by the assaulting seamen and troops who overcame all opposition of the garrison.
