Genre: Landscape Photography
Forts Goa or Gova, Kanka [Kanakdurg] and Fathegadh, were constructed by the Hubshee of Janjira to blockade Severndrug, which he [had] been unable to capture. But the Angrias got too strong for him on land, and he had to abandon the project, and about 1723 Canojee Angria was in full possession of all four strongholds. In 1755 the Bombay forces drove out the Angrians.
All four forts of Severndrug were rendered back to the Peishwa in 1755. But his local officers molested the smaller coasters as badly as the Angrians had done. A force from Bombay was again sent against the place in 1805, when Fort Goa was carried by assault. Upon which the other forts surrendered. Severndrug was again returned to the Mahratta government the Subedar, Hari Bellal being declared a rebel.
In 1817 the whole country was integrated with British India. A small garrison was posted in Fort Goa, later replaced by a squad of armed native police. Its full armament had been 42 cannons, only 8 less than Severndrug.
