On the rocks in the foreground were washed up many bodies from the wreck.

Here occured the wreck of the ship "Columbus", 700 tons, Nacodah Syed Bashumper. She left Jeddah 20th July 1862 laden with salt, dates, wool, ghee and 25 Arab horses. She had a crew of 40 and 230 hadjees returning from the pilgrimage to Mecca. She had also as passengers 2 Austrian passengers with their wives bound for Singapore. Off the Konkun coast the ship sprang a leak, when the melting of the salt cargo jammed the pumps. Ultimately she drove ashore on the 7th of August in a gale of wind, thunder and lightning and driving rain. She broke up with heavy loss of life, there being only 63 survivors including one of the Austrian men. A gentleman from Ratnagiri arrived in time to render some succour to those washed ashore alive. His account is repeated overleaf.
