Ratnagiri Fort, The Konkun Coast. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
The elephant steps leading down to the highway into the town and interior. The harbour is such only in the Fair Season, and the old jetty used by the ferry steamer passengers is away in the distance.
A place of little history though its walls, with 41 bastions, enclose an area of, perhaps, 2 square miles. The fort and district were surrendered to Colonel Kennedy and the Konkun Field Force on 31st May 1818 without opposition. In 1862 its 117 iron cannon were still lying about, obsolete and useless. Though the smaller stones from buildings have been taken for public works in the town, those of the ramparts are so high and crude as to make their removal an uneconomical proposition.
