Ratnagiri, The Konkun Coast. Inscription on the tomb of King Theebaw. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
Theebaw, King of Lower Burma, was brought here in exile in 1886, and died here in 1916. With him came his two queens, his daughters, and an extensive and picturesque suite. The latter in time all drifted away, and at the end, only locally engaged staff were employed. The senior queen died first, than the king. The Government of India then decided to repatriate the remaining members of the royal family so that the princesses might find suitable husbands of their own race. At first [illegible], the junior queen, refused to leave without the body of the King, and only after much delay and persuasion did she do so.
