Jaitapur, The Konkun Coast. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
Jaitapur lies 2 miles from Moosakazi anchorage with the town of Rajapur 12 miles further up at tidal limits. The entrance to the river is through a mile wide break in the laterite cliffs, some 80 feet high. In the Moghul era it was the port for the Adil Shah of Bijapur, at which period an English merchant adventurer says of it:
"Heere belongeth to the two towns junks which goeth yearly to the Red Sea, Achin, Gombroon and other places."
Another Englishman, also on trading bent said:
"This is a daynty Bay to ride in and a most daynty place for all manner of fishes, and for oysters no better in the world."
Today it has no trade worth mentioning, but the Bombay ferry steamers call and handle passengers at Moosakazi, their ticket office being one of the small houses seen across the water.
