Viziadrug Fort, The Konkun Coast. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:

Genre: Architectural Photography
This bastion commands the circular passage to the second guard gate. The view is looking north to the other bank of the River Wagotan estuary. Watson's fleet anchored abreast of the fort here. The fighting ships employed here were: Royal Navy - Kent 70 guns, Cumberland 66, Tyger 60, Salisbury 50, Bridgewater 20, Kingfisher 20. Bombay Marine - Protector 44, Revenge 28, Guardian 28, Viper 16.
Viziadrug/Gheria. Also called by the early English voyagers Kharepatan, from the name of the town at the head of the River Wagotan's tidal waters.
Viziadrug, as the Moghuls called it and as it is known today was "miscalled Gheria" when in the occupation of the Angrian pirates. It is about 70 miles from Bombay, Long:73-23, Lat:16-3. Capt. Hall, a sailot merchant adventurer, was there in 1628 whilst the ships HOPEWELL, HART and STAR were at Jaitapore. Peter Andrews in recording the visit of his commander writes: "And founde it a most brave harboure." Also - "It is an excellent place for fortification and good stoare of fresh water by a river's mouth; where alsoe lyeth great stoare of stones already hewen cut, soe there is nothing wanteth but the King's leave; then a small matter would build a fort to oppose any anymis." Actually there are ruins inside the fort of a wall of some antiquity. Gheria, so-called, came into notoriety only with the rise of Canojee Angria, whose father had been a seaman in Shivajee's fleet. Shivajee built the fort in 1662, 18 years before his death, 1680.
Detailed account of the Angrias continues overleaf.
