Shivajee placed Malwan on the map when he built (mostly by artizans lent by the Portuguese) Sindadrug [Sindhudurg] - The Fortress of the Seas - as the first step to raising a navy with which to pursue the same tactics of raid and plunder by sea as has worked so well in his forays on land against Moghols. So much money did he lavish upon this, his pet project, that it is regarded as his cenotaph. In 1713 the kingdom of Shivajee was divided into the states of Satara and Kolhapore, the latter including Malwan.
In 1768 Bombay sent an expedition against the Malvanis, being incensed at piratical acts on their shipping. There was very little opposition, Sindadrug being surrendered by a mutinous garrison.
