Fort Sindadrug, Malwan. The Konkun Coast. View from the main gate looking towards the town. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
Fort Padamgad, what is left of it, is the last collection of rocks nearest the shore. (Continued from previous leaf) Wide scattered field of reefs and islets, the nearest of which is Padamgarh where was Shivajee's naval depot. Time has since pushed over his masonry courses and now it can be hardly distinguished from the surrounding crop of loose boulders. Beyond and westward of Padamgarh is Sindadrug itself, entirely surrounded by water at high tide. For some miles north and south the charts mark it as foul ground, and the submerged rock upon which the 'S.S. Johnstone Castle' came to grief is marked by a buoy.
Malwan, at one time belonging to the State of Kolhapore, but named Fort Augustus when held by Bombay troops after its capture in 1768 pending payment of the indemnity imposed by the Govt. of Bombay for losses they shipping had suffered at the hands of the Malwanis.
