The inner archway of the main gate. Sadashevgad, The North Canara Coast. Photographer: Venn, Thomas Walters

Genre: Architectural Photography
It seems to have been roofed over when it contained a garrison. The place is in ruins and much overgrown; but the avenue of casuarina trees must have been planted about 80 years ago, say 1850.
On the north bank of the Kalavati river. It was built only in 1715 by the Rajah of Sonda as a block of between the East India Company's factory at Kadvad (old Karwar) and the sea. Its major episode was the attempting February 1783 by a battalion of Bo. Native Infantry to escalade it at midnight. The attempt failed. Lieut Hodges was killed and three other officers temporarily blinded by discharges of 'langridge' at the two embrasures against which the scaling ladders had been placed. Notwithstanding this success the Killedar abandoned the fort the following night. Vide 'Memoirs of a Field Officer' - Price, 1834.
