"As I rode from one green hill to another, I began to catch glimpses at intervals of clusters of sharp spires and dark pinnacles rising above the trees. I seemed to be approaching some lofty abbey in the wilderness, of vast and irregular dimensions. At least I came suddenly upon a wide 'ancient', bare alike of trees and herb, black and strewn with ashes, as if some recent conflagration had consumed the very ground as well as what grew upon it. In the centre of this charred and desolated space rose the black rocks of Yaanna." 'Wild Life in Canara' Gordon S. Forbes, M.C.S. 1885.
