The chapel in 1935, Angediva. The North Canara Coast. Photographer: Venn, T.W.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Whitewashed without but bare of all ecclesiastical furnishings within. It faces the ‘Quartel’ or Place d’armes.
Angediva for 150 years or so kept in full commission. It was, too, and intermediate rendezvous for the Portuguese royal navy, especially so for their frigates engaged in suppressing piracy. The English corsairs English and Taylor, in company, in 1720 passed between the island and the main, they consulted as to whether they should attempt to force their way ashore to procure fresh water of to sail on to Galicut. They choose the latter course. During the British occupation of Goa, a detachment from the Native Infantry battalion at Sasashevgad, with the consent of the Viceroy of Goa, was stationed here. The last garrison of Portuguese troops was withdrawn in 1843.
