The Jains were formerly in some strength here, and one of their temples still stands, though abandoned. Remains of others (such as this carved column in a Moslem’s back yard) are scattered around the vicinity.
Now a small and rather squalid townlet was formerly of importance. The Portuguese were the first Europeans here. Purchese, the English merchant, was here in 1613, and others followed without establishing a settlement until the Courteen Company, rivals of the original East India Company. Three of their factors lie buried here. Wye, Vernworthy and Barton, a surgeon. The graves were a protected monument during the British Raj. 1638/1639 A.D.
