Pigeon or Netrani Island, 12 miles off the Coast of Canara. Photographer: Venn, T.W.
- Scope & Content:
-
The encrusted rock is the only footing available in the whole circumference of the island.
On this occasion it was reached from Bhatkal by a sailing boat towing a toney (dug-out) for the landing. It seems never to have been lived upon, but the edible nests of the sea swiftlet were collected there at one time, though the last year recorded is 1801. There were none there in 1805. An inspector of the Bombay Coastguard Service landed in 1929 but found nothing to report. It is, however, still the home of the white bellied sea eagle, attracted there by its isolation and the great number of sea snakes in the surrounding waters, quite a quantity of bones at certain spots confirming that this was a favourite item of their feeding.
