The gate out of which marched General Mathews and about 1200 of his men, having capitulated to Tipu Sultan on terms. It being agreed that they should pile their arms on glacis and then be permitted to march to Sadashevgad for repatriation to Bombay. One of the provisions of the treaty had been that everything in the fort when the British took it should be left behind. Tipu, however, found the treasury and treasure vault empty. Hence the resultant revenge.
