Mangalore Fort. The South Canara Coast. Photographer: Venn, T.W.
- Scope & Content:
-
The Port Officer’s garden is a bit of the fort glacis.
Tipu Sultan caused to be brought before him the fort commandant and his principal officers who had surrendered to the British and in the presence of his assembled troops had them blown from the muzzles of his great guns.
He declaimed: "I, with 30,000 men besieged the place for 8 months and could not take it, how could your dastardly souls suffer it to be taken from you with 800 men when you had 4,000 to defend it.”
The north side ditch of the fort was not, like all the other sections, filled in for reclamations and road improvements. The area has become a little hamlet of its own, each dwelling with a few palm trees. The Port Officer’s bungalow, on a former bastion, over looks this picture.
