View looking along the base of the wall of the Ramachandra Temple, showing carved panels, pilasters and attached columns; with an Indian figure seated at the right to indicate scale. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3140). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '492 - represents in detail the portion of the Façade seen to the right of the last Photograph. One of the centre figures is Hunuman, the monkey-god, to whom this whole country was formerly sacred. The spout on the right is that used to carry off the water and oil with which the lingam, which stood inside the building, used to be daily anointed by the Brahmins.'
