Lyon Collection: Photographs to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India, by Captain Lyon. Nos. 491 to 567 [Vol. 7 of 7]. Photographer(s): Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Modern buckram-bound album measuring 520 x 455 mm, containing 38 albumen prints mounted one to a page on card leaves (recto only). The prints are laid down within a tinted border, the bottom of each bearing the legend, 'India by Captain Lyon.' The photographs are listed on the handwritten title-page arranged by the photographer's number along with with the registration number of the duplicate prints in the Archaeological Survey India Office collections. Each print has a letterpress caption label pasted onto the mount beneath the image and Lyon's own description pasted onto the reverse. These descriptions are from Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson. This volume depicts architectural views and sculpture details at Vijayanagara and Tadpatri, with one photograph each from Bijapur (print 37) and Ahmadabad (print 38).
