Ruins of Vijianuggur [Vijayanagara] near Calamapoor [Kamalapuram]. A small ruined temple called the Volkonda [Ramachandra Temple]. The West and South sides of the Sanctum. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
General view of the Ramachandra Temple, with the sanctuary tower in the foreground. Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '493 - is a view of the west and south sides of the Vimana or Tower over the sanctuary. It will be easily recognised as of Dravidian architecture, and in style approaching the Subramanya temple at Tanjore. It is probably as old as anything to be found in this city, and may possibly claim as early a date as the 14th century.'
