Ruins of Vijianuggur [Vijayanagara] near Calamapoor [Kamalapuram]. A small ruined temple called the Volkonda [Ramachandra Temple]. Carvings on the outside of enclosure wall. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David

Genre: Architectural Photography
Oblique view looking along the exterior wall of the Ramachandra Temple, showing the frieze running along the wall in five bands. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3144). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '496 - The Sculptures shown in this Photograph are even more Nihevite in their character than the last They occur on the outside of the same wall, and though different in character, remind us of the arrangements at Hallabeed. The lowest range is occupied by elephants; above these are the horses; and over these the procession of men. Above these are women dancing with a vigour and freedom not now known in the East. The top row is so weather-worn that the subject cannot well be made out, but it seems as if it represented some great ceremonial. The stone on this side was either not so deeply cut in the first instance, or has suffered more from the weather than the carvings on the inner side of this wall, which are now much the most vigorous of the two. The immense size of the stones of which this wall is built renders its appearance doubly impressive.'
