Ruins of Vijianuggur [Vijayanagara] near Calamapoor [Kamalapuram]. Large monolithic trough. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
View of the massive stone drinking trough for elephants, 41 feet long and hollowed out of a single block of rock. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3145). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '497 - Turning to the right as we leave the Temple Gate, and threading our way through endless ruinous foundations, we arrive in about 100 yards at a large open space, in one corner of which on our right as we enter it, is the large stone trough here represented. It is cut out of one stone 41 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. It was thrown on its side by the Mussulmen, while searching for treasure when they took the city. There is a mound of earth close to it with a stone foundation overgrown with weeds; this was called the Kistnadaverayer; and on this stone foundation is said to have stood formerly a handsome carved stone throne, on which every evening the king sat, while the elephants were brought from the neighbouring stables to drink from the trough.'
