View looking across the tank, with central shrine, towards temple arcades on the further side. With a mandapa at extreme right and gopura beyond. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3151). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '503 - If, instead of following the road, we turn short to the right, after passing through the gateway, as described in 502, and again descending the hill for about 200 yards, at its foot a large tank is found. Passing round this tank, we come upon the view here shown, the same tower as represented in 501 being again seen in the back-ground. The tank is surrounded with porticos, and was formerly used by the god for his annual aquatic excursion in February.'
