View looking along the hillside towards the triple-shrined, pyramidal-roofed Shiva temples on Hemakuta Hill, to the south of Hampi Village. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3153). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '505 - Following the paved road, and just as we begin to descend the hill on the river side, another ruined gateway and tower is met on the left, and passing through it, the view here given is seen. The rock shelves down at a sharp incline, and at the top is the group of curious temples here shown. It is impossible to get any information concerning them from the natives on the spot. They are understood, however, to belong to the Jaina religion, and are in a modified form of the Chalukya style of architecture, found frequently further north, and introduced probably in the course of the sixteenth century.'
