View of a mandapa with richly-carved columns in the Vitthala Temple, similar to print 20. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3159). Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '511 - is another view of the same Temple, giving more in detail the beautiful pillars supporting the roof, every one of which will well repay the closest investigation. The interior is, as seen in the two views, raised about four feet from the ground, the exterior of the base being also beautifully carved, though more minutely, than any we have hitherto seen. The wonderful manner in which the pillars, each of which is composed of one block of granite, have been cut away, cannot fail to excite admiration. Unfortunately, the whole temple is fast going to decay. A portion of the front, as already stated, has fallen, and there appears every probability that a very much larger part will also soon follow, if some steps are not soon taken to repair it.'
