Ruins of Vijianuggur [Vijayanagara] near Humpee [Hampi]. The Vigiavittaldover or temples near the River Tumboodra [Tungabhadra]. The stone car. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of the temple car or ratha, carved out of granite in the form of a miniature shrine, in the court of the Vitthala Temple. The car is also seen in print 19. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3162). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '514 - Between this Temple of Witoba and the other small temple, as seen in 508, stands the Stone Car represented in this Photograph. The base is of one stone, well carved, and the interior is hollowed out. The top is of brick, the wheels are also of stone, and are made to turn on their axes. The height of the whole is about 20 feet, but it is usually so buried in jungle that it is difficult to examine it properly.'
