View showing sculptural decoration at the base of the sanctuary tower of the Venkataramana Temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3165). Lyon's Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '517 - At a very short distance the temple is entered by one of the side doors in the wall. Worship is daily performed here, and the Brahmins are very jealous of strangers entering. This view shows the South Façade of the sanctuary, which has a small tower over it. The base is of a hard hornblend stone, and well carved. From its sculpture, it is apparent that it is dedicated to the worship of Vishnu. The monkey-god, it will be observed, appears everywhere.'
