Close view of sculptual decoration on the base of the gopura of Ramalingeshvara temple. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3168). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '520 - This view is a continuation of 519, and represents the façade of the southern gateway, on the side towards the town, the portion shown in this Photograph being on the other side of the doorway. This is 40 feet in height, the gateposts being each of a single stone. The stone used in this, as in every part of the temple, is of a dark green colour, of the hardest description; and taking this into consideration, it is doubtful whether we must not award the palm for mechanical excellence to the work here to be found, even over the wonders of Hallabeed and Bailoor.'
