Tarputry [Tadpatri]. Temple in ruins near the river. Carving on the S. and E. sides of base of northern tower. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Numbered '521' in the negative.
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of base of unfinished gopura of Ramalingeshvara temple, showing detail of carved work. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3169). Lyon's 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs prepared to illustrate the ancient architecture of Southern India' (Marion and Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: '521 - The Carvings on the base of the southern, or town side, have already been illustrated, and beautiful as they are, they must yield in richness to those on the base of what was once the northern tower. This view shows two sides of this base. Unlike the southern tower, the immense stones across the gateway have either fallen or never been erected, and thus each block stands separate and detached, and so completely has all remains of the tower disappeared, that it seems perfectly evident that it never was carried higher than it now stands.'
