Group portrait of five seated thakurs of Sitamau, with three attendants standing behind. This portrait is reproduced as plate 379, vol VII of J. Forbes Watson, 'The People of India' (8 vols, London, 1868-75).
For notes on the dress and physical characteristics of the sitters, see the table in Government of India Foreign Consultations (General), July 1863 (IOR P/205/14), p. 38. The five seated figures are there identified as (left to right): Kotharee Govind Singh, Mahajun (aged 40); Thakoor Ruttun Singh, Chowan (aged 50, relative of the Raja and Thakur of Dupakhera); Maharaj Takht Singh, Rhattore (aged 41, younger son of the Raja and Thakur of Chikla); Bulwunt Singh, Rhattore; Bhawami Bukhsh, Kayath (son of the Kamdar).
Waterhouse's narrative of his journey includes the following description of his stay at Sitamau: 'On the 29th March I left Jowra for Seetamhow, and arrived there on the 30th. At Seetamhow I met with every civility and assistance, which was not the case at most places I stayed at, and the consequence was, I had not so much difficulty about getting pictures. On the 5th April I set of for Chundwassa...'
