Sir James Robert Dunlop Smith Collection: Album of Indian rulers and types. Photographer(s): Waterhouse, James
- Scope & Content:
-
Full leather bound album, stamped Photograph Album in gilt in ornate script on front cover, measuring 295 mm x 245 mm. The prints are lightly pasted down alongedges and all are captioned in ink in a neat hand. The prints themselves are generally in very good condition, with few signs of fading.
The majority of prints are very fine portraits of ruling families of Central India (mainly Bhopal), together with four larger group portraits of ethnic types from Nepal (prints 22-25). Many of these appear in volumes 2 and 7 of J. Forbes Watson, The People of India (8 vols, London, 1868-75), and a note in vol 7 specifically credits this material to Waterhouse: 'The group [no.359 in vol 7] is contributed by Lieut. Waterhouse, of the Royal Artillery, by whom the whole of the series of Jubbulpoor, Saugor, Indore, Bhopal, &c., were taken, when he was employed for the purpose by the Government of India. In the ease and admirable combination of many of the subjects, true artistic skill has been employed.' The Nepalese types, different in style and format, perhaps the work of another photographer.
